March Gardening Checklist

March means new beginnings!
There is plenty to do this month as the growing season is just around the corner.

Tropicals and Houseplants

Tropicals and Houseplants

  • Repot houseplants into slightly larger pots using Town & Country Professional Potting Mix Plus

  • As days get longer, start feeding with Shultz 10-15-10 for healthy new growth

  • Brighten your home with orchids, African violets, bromeliads, and other flowering plants

Indoor Seed & Bulb Starting

Indoor Seed & Bulb Starting

  • Start flower and vegetable seeds indoors—grab our Seed Starting Guide in-store or online

  • Use grow lights to promote strong, healthy seedlings
    Begin fertilizing seedlings with Fertilome Water Soluble Plant Food 20-20-20

  • Stock up on Crook’s Brand garden seed
  • Prevent damp-off disease by applying Hi-Yield Captan when first true leaves appear

  • Label seedlings with wood or plastic markers for easy identification
  • Start dahlia, canna, and begonia bulbs indoors for later outdoor planting

Flowers

  • Cut back dead stalks on perennials and ornamental grasses
  • Fertilize bulbs with Dutch Bulb Food
  • Feed perennials with T&C Fruit & Flower Food

  • Prepare seed beds and plant wildflower seeds from mid-March to late April

Roses

  • Keep winter protection on roses until new shoots appear
  • Once warming starts, prune hybrid tea roses to 8-12 inches and remove dead canes

Berries

Berries

  • Prune and thin raspberries, removing dead canes

  • Apply Soil Sulfur to prevent yellowing leaves
  • Plant bare-root raspberries and strawberries from mid to late March
  • Use Casoron herbicide to keep raspberry beds weed-free
  • Spray fruit trees with Hi-Yield Dormant Spray to eliminate overwintering pests.
  • Remove straw mulch from strawberries if applied last fall

Vegetables

Vegetables

  • Clear old vines and corn stalks if not done last fall

  • Add Soil Enhancer or compost, mix in sulfur, and till soil to prepare for planting

  • Plant cool-weather crops like leafy greens and root vegetables now in high tunnel hoop houses

Lawns

Lawns

  • Rake matted grass as snow melts to prevent snow mold

  • Apply Natural Guard Soil Activator to break down thatch and green up the lawn

Trees & Shrubs

Trees & Shrubs

  • Prune most trees now, except maples and birches (wait until summer to prevent bleeding)

  • Fertilize with Save-A-Tree or T&C Tree & Shrub Food

  • Apply Fertilome Tree & Shrub Systemic Insect Drench to prevent insect damage all season

  • Use Hi-Yield Dormant Spray to kill overwintering pests on shade trees

  • Check tree stakes and loosen ties to prevent damage

Ponds

Ponds

  • Once the pond thaws, clean and restart pumps and filters to rebalance the ecosystem
  • Remove debris but avoid draining and scrubbing to protect beneficial bacteria
  • Add Microbe Lift Spring Cleaner to break down waste and jumpstart the ecosystem
  • Test pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels weekly for 4-6 weeks, then biweekly
  • Wait until water is 50°F before feeding fish (check in the morning)
  • Move overwintered hardy plants back to their growing spots
  • Divide and repot water lilies and marginal plants as needed
  • Fertilize pond plants with AgSafe Aquatic Tabs for better growth
  • Clean biological filters and skimmers—avoid chlorinated water to protect beneficial bacteria
